Two iconic bridges, one famous market, countless friendly faces. For one of the most scenic walks Sydney has to offer, take this 7km Sydney highlights tour!
Start your walk in the harbourside suburb of Glebe, where parklands and walking trails line the bay. Wander along the shoreline past Jubilee, Blackwattle Bay and Wentworth Park. A viaduct runs through, built over a hundred years ago to carry an industrial train line. Now, it supports the light rail network, which stops all through this area. Don’t be tempted, because today is a walking day!
Follow the seagulls, and you’ll find the famous Sydney Fish Market. Each day, fishing trawlers anchor in the bay to unload the freshest seafood onto the dock. Prawns, oysters, octopus, crab and deep-sea delicacies – it’s a seafood lover’s nirvana. The dining options are excellent, with everything from sushi to classic fish and chips. Grab a seat, and enjoy your feast.
The next section takes you to the footings of the double-span ANZAC Bridge. Locals call it ‘the wonderbra,’ for reasons that become obvious when you see it! Underneath is the original swing bridge, now dwarfed by its modern counterpart. You might be lucky enough to watch the local Dragon Boats racing. Listen for the beating of drums, which they use to keep the oars moving in time.
Next, the path takes you around the end of the Pyrmont Peninsula, and the view begins to open up to include the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The city skyline looks stunning from the western side, with the light catching the glass in the office towers. Cool off at the waterside seating area, where you can dip your feet into the harbour. Further on, you’ll pass historic Jones Bay Wharf, before reaching the Pyrmont Bridge.
It’s a lovely stroll across the historic Pyrmont Bridge, with its bright flags waving in the wind. On the other side, Darling Harbour has much to offer. If you have the time, visit SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium to see the ‘Day & Night on the Reef’ exhibit or Madame Tussauds Sydney for happy snaps with celebrities. WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo is here too, with all the cute native animals you’ll ever need in your life.
Not far to go now! Reserve enough energy to get up the hill into the CBD, where the shade of the street trees is a welcome relief. At the corner of Market and York Streets, you’ll see the enormous green dome of the Queen Victoria Building. Step inside for some of Sydney’s grandest architecture, and a sneak-peek at the high-end fashion stores.
Just a block away is the iconic Sydney Tower Eye. As the day draws to a close, this is the best place to watch a famous Sydney sunset. The observation deck is 250 metres above the city, with uninterrupted views from Bondi Beach to the Blue Mountains. As the sky turns pink and golden, the city changes into a glittering evening gown, illuminating the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. You can even look back at where you’ve walked, retracing your journey from your vantage point in the sky. What a perfect way to end a DIY day in Sydney!
